Genetic modification links

Posted by Stella

Craig Venter who has synthesized an entire bacterial genome and used it to take over a cell, a 'synthetic cell'. It opens the way to creating useful microbes from scratch to make products like biofuels. It is “the first self-replicating species we’ve had on the planet whose parent is a computer.” This was only in May 2010.

and his website Synthetic Genomics

And a link from the blog, das kapitalism. Venter, in 2009, was apparently genetically modifying algae to secrete oil, removing the need to compress and extract it mechanically. I haven't had a change to find this on his website yet, but it looks very, very interesting.
